Winter Trail Maintenance Suspended at Voyageurs National Park

Spring is finally on its way! As the snow melts and bird songs fill our ears, it’s time to start saying “see you next year!” to winter activities at Voyageurs National Park.

Voyageurs National Park is suspending all winter trail maintenance on all snowmobile and ski trails, including the Kabetogama Ice Road. Park trail markers and hazard signs will be removed promptly.

This yearly routine ensures the safety for all park visitors and staff. As temperatures rise, ice conditions quickly deteriorate and create unsafe conditions. Standing water and pockets of slush are appearing on frozen lake surfaces and visitors are advised to use extreme caution when on Voyageurs ice surfaces: you are traveling at your own risk

Voyageurs National Park provided a stunning winter landscape to appreciate and recreate in. Many adventurers completed our Voyageurs Winter Challenge by exploring the park’s skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing opportunities. We are thankful for the cold and snow but are excited to welcome the thaw of spring!

REMINDER: Voyageurs National Park is open to visitors, but facilities such as the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and Park Headquarters have closed indefinitely. Guests will be notified when full operations resume online at nps.gov/voya and on social media channels. The Park Headquarters office will remain open for calls and inquiries by phone, email, and shipping deliveries only.
