As Minnesota’s 30th Governor, Elmer L. Andersen (1909–2004) was a driving force behind the creation of Voyageurs National Park, often celebrated as “the father of Voyageurs National Park.” His vision and tireless advocacy ensured the protection of this extraordinary landscape, securing its place as Minnesota’s only national park.

In 1961, shortly after being elected governor, Andersen visited the area that would become Voyageurs National Park. He personally hosted National Park Service Director Conrad Wirth on a tour of the region’s lakes, ancient rock formations, and vast boreal forests. Deeply inspired by the natural beauty and historical significance of the area, Andersen recognized its potential for both preservation and recreation.

During his governorship (1961–1963), Andersen worked to mobilize public and legislative support for the park. He emphasized its ecological importance, such as its role in protecting habitats for species like bald eagles, wolves, and loons, and its potential as a recreational destination for boating, fishing, and camping. Andersen leveraged his political influence to engage federal lawmakers, conservation groups, and the National Park Service in the campaign to establish the park.

Even after leaving office, Andersen remained steadfast in his commitment. He continued advocating for Voyageurs, working with local communities and conservation organizations to address concerns about land use and garner bipartisan support. His persistence paid off when Congress authorized the creation of the park in 1971. After years of additional planning and negotiation, Voyageurs National Park was officially established in 1975.

Governor Andersen’s pivotal contributions are remembered as a cornerstone of the park’s legacy. His efforts not only preserved one of Minnesota’s most iconic landscapes but also ensured future generations could experience its unparalleled beauty and historical significance.

This year, we’re celebrating 50 years of Voyageurs National Park by sharing 50 inspiring stories of the people who shaped its legacy—from the visionaries who established the park to those protecting its beauty today.
