A Time to be Thankful

This is the time to pause and give thanks for the wonderful community of people that care for this special place that is Voyageurs National Park.

Looking back, we all recall that the year began with a challenging government shutdown. Fortunately, through the support of Voyageurs National Park Association and others, we were able to reopen the Rainy Lake Visitor Center, ensure visitor safety, and maintain winter trails, like the Green snowmobile trail that connects the park’s gateway communities. Establishment of this trail assured that local resort owners had a safe route to direct their guests to.

From capturing footage of wolves fishing in the park; creating a long term plan to improve facilities at Kettle Falls; making improvements to destination sites like Ellsworth Rock Garden and campsites like Soboleski Bay; providing programs that foster a connection between visitors and this beautiful part of Minnesota’s North Woods; and making sure that everyone goes home safe at the end of their experience, it’s been a full and positive year. I’m grateful for park staff who are so dedicated to protecting the outstanding resources of the park, and providing opportunities for people to enjoy them.

None of what the National Park Service does would be possible without the cherished partnership between the park and gateway communities. The services the communities provide to the visitors seeking to escape to and enjoy the park are essential for many.

I’m especially grateful for our continually expanding partnership with Voyageurs National Park Association, and the community of donors and volunteers that comprise the VNPA community. VNPA became our official Friends group this year and worked with us to create an exciting new strategic plan that will greatly improve our ability to engage with the public and complete new projects. Together, we broke ground on a new hiking trail in the Mukooda area, added 6 acres to the park, welcomed 22 Teen Ambassadors and over 900 school-age visitors to our waters, hosted community programs, and started the process of applying for Dark-Sky Park certification.

Thank you.

Don’t forget the magic of Voyageurs in winter. I hope to see you out on the winter trails, enjoying the park in all seasons.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
