Aquatic Ecologist, Ryan Maki, Appointed to IRLWWB Adaptive Management Committee

Ryan Maki, Voyageurs National Park Aquatic Ecologist, has been appointed to a three-year term as the first U.S. Co-Chair of the International Rainy - Lake of the Woods Watershed Board's newly-formed Adaptive Management Committee (AMC) by the International Joint Commission.

The AMC helps to ensure that joint U.S. and Canadian water level management of Rainy Lake and Namakan Reservoir through the International Joint Commission will maintain a healthy ecosystem while providing the best possible conditions for human uses.

Ryan's appointment to the AMC, where he will be working with committee members representing Tribal, First Nation, and Métis partners and Federal, State, and Provincial agencies, continues Voyageurs' history of close cooperation with park neighbors to protect the exceptional natural lands and waters in the region.

Ryan has been working on lake level management issues in the Rainy Lake-Lake of the Woods watershed since arriving at Voyageurs National Park in 2004. Ryan currently manages the park's Aquatic Ecology Program which conducts water quality, mercury, and amphibian monitoring, analyzes the impacts of aquatic invasive species, and assesses how water level management affects the park’s aquatic ecosystem.
