Destination Voyageurs National Park (DVNP) partnered with the University of Minnesota Extension Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships and Tourism Center on a sustainable tourism assessment. The report, Sustainable Tourism Development in Destination Voyageurs National Park Communities, was presented to DVNP and the community on May 6, 2014 at the AmericInn in International Falls. John Bennett, Community Economics Educator with the U of M Extension’s Center of Community Vitality, shared highlights and recommendations. The tourism assessment process involved insights and observations of community members, First Impression visitors (think Secret Shoppers), and a visiting Expert Team. Recommendations in the report are structured around several key themes:
-To create stronger collaborations and community bonds -To maintain and enhance attractions and amenities -To bolster community support -To expand marketing of the DVNP region
DVNP will continue to review and implement the recommendations in the report over the coming months. Electronic or hard copies are available upon request. If you’d like a copy of the report, email IRRRB tourism staff mary.somnis@state.mn.us.
The DVNP website has been updated to include a listing of guides and charters. The addition of this information to the DVNP website will increase exposure for these services in the Voyageurs National Park region. Potential guests who are looking for vacation planning information now have another opportunity to find Guides and Charters. New and returning guests enjoy the benefits and enhanced experience that comes from a day on the water with those who know it best.
Many DVNP area locations have been nominated to the Heart of the Continent/National Geographic Society Geo-tourism website. Go to www.traveltheheart.org to see the activities, attractions, and businesses that have been nominated. This website, that is viewable right now, is the nominations site. National Geographic is currently building what will be the final, consumer-facing website. Plans are to launch the final website near the end of 2014 or early in 2015.
Business owners and managers are encouraged to submit their own business, as they are the most qualified to keep the information updated and correct. Local residents are welcome to nominate their favorite places to visit and recreate.
Voyageurs National Park Association is a founding member of Destination Voyageurs National Park.
