Minnesota’s National Park Legacy

Voyageurs National Park Association has produced over 3,000 copies of the Minnesota’s National Park Legacy film to distribute to libraries and schools throughout Minnesota. We hope that this educational resource will help to inform young people and community members about the natural beauty that lies just outside their back door.

National Parks intertwine history and environment with a hands-on learning approach that gives students an educational experience they will never forget. On-site field trips offer curriculum-based instruction with trained Park rangers and naturalists. Students engage in the diverse educational themes unique to each Park in pristine or urban environments with historic context.

Aside from site visits, there are many resource available for educators to build National Park lesson plans. The websites on page 5 of the DVD Companion Resource Guide for Educators have downloadable activities, but one of the most helpful resources is Park interpretive staff. Contact individuals at each Park site to learn more about the free tools available for educational use. Request DVD copies of this film for use in your classroom! Contact us at vnpa@voyageurs.org

For 9th to 11th Grade

National Parks are outstanding outdoor classrooms that offer opportunities for students of all ages to make lasting connections to the natural environment. But not all young people have the opportunity to visit them. Partnering with the National Park Service and Wilderness Inquiry, VNPA established the National Park Teen Ambassador program in 2012 to increase access for Minnesota high school students to the outdoors.

This summer program involves eight days of camping and paddling in Minnesota national parks, hiking, fishing, countless leadership activities, and opportunities to learn about conservation-related careers, Minnesota wildlife, environmental stewardship, and yourself. Learn more about this unique opportunity to experience your national parks.

Every Kid in a Park Initiative

Thanks to a White House initiative and the National Park Foundation, Voyageurs National Park is able to offer transportation grants to schools so all of America’s fourth graders can experience their National Parks. Grants can only be used for transportation to and from Voyageurs National Park.
