2016 will be an exciting year for Voyageurs and national parks across the country! The National Park Service turns 100 in 2016, and to celebrate this milestone and kick off a second century of stewardship, it launched the Find Your Park public awareness and education campaign. National parks and their partners will celebrate and work to inspire the next generation of park visitors, stewards, and advocates.
In addition, Congress recently appropriated Centennial Challenge funds to leverage partnerships for over 100 park projects that will improve facilities, accessibility, and park programs. Park partners around the country, including Voyageurs National Park Association, are matching funds to provide assistance and build awareness of these initiatives. The goal of these efforts is to reinvigorate our national parks and increase engagement by current and new audiences.
In addition, we will send our 100th National Park Teen Ambassador to Voyageurs this summer.
Voyageurs National Park and Voyageurs National Park Association will work with state leaders and partners such as REI, the Minnesota State Fair, Explore Minnesota Tourism, Minnesota sports teams, and the park’s gateway communities to shine a spotlight on our park and ensure it is known and valued throughout the state.
If you have ideas or would like to help with the Centennial Celebration, please contact Christina Hausman, VNPA executive director at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Celebrate with us and Find Voyageurs in 2016! Additional initiatives will be announced throughout the year.
|Centennial Projects and Events|
Invasive hybrid cattails will be cleared from the park’s wetlands in order to protect the park’s ecosystems by improving fish and waterfowl habitats.
|Cruiser Lake Trail Renovation
The 6.3 mile long Cruiser Lake Trail is undergoing a thorough renovation including clearing overgrown brush and repairs to boardwalks, bridges, and signs. The restoration will be complete in the early part of 2016. Cruiser Lake Trail is a wonderful way to experience wildlife, enjoy blueberries, and take in scenic lake views on the wild Kabetogama Peninsula.
We invite you to discover Voyageurs National Park by participating in events held at the park, in local communities, and in the Twin Cities.
National Parks are outstanding outdoor classrooms that offer opportunities for students of all ages to make lasting connections to the natural environment. But not all young people have the opportunity to visit them. Beginning in 2012, Voyageurs National Park Association partnered with the National Park Service and Wilderness Inquiry to create the National Park Teen Ambassador program. This project brings together Minnesota high school students on a multi-day outdoor learning expedition in Voyageurs National Park and on the Mississippi River. This year, we will be sending our 100th Teen Ambassador to the park!
|Voyageurs Art Series by Mark Herman
In celebration of the National Park Service Centennial, award-winning landmark artist Mark Herman unveiled a new Voyageurs National Park print series, the first of its kind to benefit National Parks. When you purchase these prints you support your park! 10% of the proceeds from these prints will benefit Voyageurs National Park Association.
